The COVID -19 Pandemic allowed The Prince William Humane Society ("PWHS") to stop and reflect on how we can best serve our community and its pets. Since March when we had to “temporarily” close the Adopt Shop, we watched as the rescue community struggled to meet the constant changing needs. We thought back on the past four years and realized we could make an even bigger impact and save even more lives if we work collectively to accomplish a common goal. The Prince William Humane Society has made the difficult decision to close the Adopt-Shop, an endeavor that started in the summer of 2016 and resulted in more than 1400 lives being saved. With much sadness the shop is closing, with much excitement and hope we look to the future.
The Prince William Humane Society is excited to launch a brand new endeavor. With the Prince William County Animal Shelter ("PWCAS") renovations underway & the number of animals they can help guaranteed to increase, and with our community partnership expiring, we will be refocusing our mission towards keeping pets in loving homes and protecting the most vulnerable lives who do have to enter shelter environments. We will do this by:
expanding our reach of the PAWS Fund by supporting the care of injured and sick animals who enter shelters and rescues throughout the state of Virginia, and potentially beyond,
strengthening our Fur-ever Together program to keep animals out of shelters by working with outreach groups to assist pet owners to keep pets with their people and in loving homes,
using our social media platforms to shine a light on animals needing homes all over the state, amplifying the message of smaller rescue efforts and providing a bigger network to feature their adoptable pets.
Take Dexter, pictured below. Dexter is a puppy who was born with congenital eye and esophagus issues. He is currently in the care of Squishy Face Crew, a rescue group in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area. Thanks to our shift in efforts, this pup will be provided the corrective surgery necessary for him to live a normal life.

As a result of COVID, more and more shelters and rescue groups are providing the resources necessary to keep pets in homes. While this was an initiative prior to the pandemic, these trying times have strengthened those programs to keep animals out of shelters and save space for emergency and critical care circumstances. We will strengthen our Fur-ever Together program to support owners through these difficult times and keep even more pets in the arms and homes of the people who love them.
Through the PWHS's social media and web presence, our dedicated followers will be exposed to affiliate rescues, their adoptable pets, and other pet-related content, all with the aim of increasing adoptions and saving lives. Prince William Humane Society believes that by expanding our mission to help other small rescues, we will be saving more lives and
making more of a difference. We hope you agree and will join us in this new endeavor as we travel this pathway to a no-kill society.
Donate to our general fund to help us refocus our mission!
We want to express a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported us in the past. With the community’s continued support, we will save more lives and bring a larger audience to otherwise invisible and underserved animals.
